In Victoria, approximately 90 people a year sustain a traumatic spinal cord injury. The highest proportion of these injuries is sustained by males between the ages of 15 and 35 years of age.

Spinal cord injury is a catastrophic event for people physically, psychologically and socially. Those affected will often find themselves being defined by what they can no longer do. Questions arise - am I employable, how will I ever work again, will people want to know me, will I ever be in a relationship again, how can I possibly do the things I used to love to do…?

The support of a skilled peer supporter can be one of the most powerful interventions at this time of great upheaval. Through information sharing and education, peer support reduces the sense of being alone with a problem and leads to improved self-esteem and community participation. By exposing people to the possibilities in life after a spinal cord injury, clients get a glimpse of what the future can hold for them and this provides a great source of motivation.

AQA is committed to its Vision: “To improve the quality of life of people affected by physical disability through active promotion of their capacity, their value and their right to participate in all aspects of community life”. With community support, AQA can continue to make a difference in the lives of people who sustain spinal cord injury and for the family that support them.
